ABOU SIR

Abou Sīr contains many monuments rooted in ancient Egyptian history, such as the Fifth Dynasty pyramids, including those of Sahure Re, Neferefre and Neferirkare, as well as sun temples, the most famous of which is Userkaf Sun Temple. Many important monuments found in this region are now exhibited in the Egyptian Museum at Tahrir Square in Cairo. There are also numerous historic sites of Islamic antiquity nearby, such as the village of Aziziya which contains the prison where Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) was kept for several years; the tomb of the Grand Companion Thabet Al-Benantim, and Prophet Moses Mosque.
