TUKH EL-NASSARA

Many important political events occurred in Deir Mawas during the 1919 Revolution. On 18 March 1919, the city residents cut the railway lines in the city and killed many British officers, the most prominent being Pope, who was an inspector of the British Prisons Authority. In retaliation, the British Army executed some of the residents of the city and imprisoned others. In front of the City Council building is a memorial for these local martyrs. This event is commemorated every year on 18th March as the National Day of the governorate.
