Hawamdia

Hawamdiya is a city that directly overlooks the Nile. It is bordered from the south by Badrashīn central administrative district, from the north by Tamoua and Al-Manawat, from the east by the Nile and from the west by Al-Maryoutia and Saqara Road.

The major industry in Hawamdiya is the refining of sugar; its huge sugar refinery is one of the largest in Egypt and the Middle East, and includes within it a number of smaller factories, such as candy-making and equipment manufacture. There is also the Kesma and Shabrawishy factory for the manufacture of perfumes and oils.

In the past, Hawamdiya depended on agriculture. Because of its industrial development, however, agriculture has been sharply curtailed in the city because of the building of factories on most of the agricultural land.
