Balbies

Bilbeis is one of the oldest cities in Egypt and was considered a gateway for those who came to Egypt during its very ancient past. It has been one of the most famous cities in Al-Sharqia governorate throughout the ages. It was first named Beis, then the prefix Bil was added to its name, meaning ‘beautiful castle’.

The original name of Al-Sharqia governorate was Sharqia Bilbeis, which means the lands located on the east of Bilbeis.  Bilbeis was one of the important cities in the Nile Delta at the time of the Ottomans and the French Campaign in Egypt. This city played an important role in planning the seizure of the Fatimid ministry.

The location of Bilbeis granted it a military and strategic importance since its earliest history. At the time of the Pharaohs, it was the eastern entrance to Egypt. Its importance increased in modern times after the military defeat of 1967 when it was the first defensive point after Egypt lost control of the Sinai and the three Canal cities. Bilbeis is home to the Egyptian Air Force Academy and many units and airports that were used in the October 1973 war. It also contains many major military units.
