Qanatir El-Khairiya is named after the Muhammad Ali Barrage. This city has large gardens and parks and is one of the important crossings to the Nile Delta. It is 20 kilometers north of Cairo.  In 1867 a defect appeared in the barrage because of the water pressure. Khedive Ismail directed his attention to repairing this defect and ordered the greatest engineers at the time to repair it. They were Mogel, who later left Egypt to settle in France, Bahgat Pasha, Mazhar Pasha, and Mr. Fawar, the English engineer. The repairs were finished during Khedive Ismail’s reign.
