Chebin El-Kom

Shebin El-Kom is a city and the capital of Menoufia governorate. It is also its largest city.

Its original Coptic name was Otbarbich, which was later changed to Spenta, which means ‘a branch of the Nile’ referring to the Sea of Shebin.  Later still, the words El-Kom were added, which mean ‘village,’ thereby becoming Shebin El-Kom, meaning ‘the village of the Nile branch’, which is the Canal of Shebin Sea. Herodotus called it Othreyces, while others in Roman times called it Avrod Neopolas, which means City of Al-Zahra.

It was known in the Mamluk era as Sekret Shebin, and then returned to its old name of Shebin El-Kom in the Ottoman era.
