El-Arish is 335 kilometers east of Cairo, and has a population of 75,000 which is a mix of Bedouin and city dwellers. Currently the government has divided Sinai into two regions, Northern Sinai with El-Arish as its capital, and Southern Sinai with El-Tor as its capital.
