CHEBRA KHIT

Chebre Khit city was involved in a battle with French forces on 13 July 1798. After the French Campaign reached to the west of Alexandria City on 2 July, it marched on the city and occupied it. Napoleon then proceeded south towards Cairo via Damanhur, where he was able to occupy Rashīd on 6 July.  He then arrived at Rahmaniya, a village on the Nile. Meanwhile, the Mamluks were preparing an army, led by Murad Bey, to face the French.  The two armies met near Chebre Khīt on 13 July.  The Mamluks were defeated and forced to retreat to Vagafil, while Murad Bey returned to Cairo.  The French army met the Mamluk army again at the Battle of Imbaba (also known as Al-Ahram Battle, or Battle of the Pyramids), where Murad Bey’s soldiers were again defeated on 21 July 1798.
